Strong Arvid

isn’t he just – a direct response drawing with details (and weights) added afterwards.

This is another one which has it’s origins in the incomparable Swedish Outdoor Life.

Things have been busy round here – and hot! It’s so stuffy here. August has wrapped us in a warm damp blanket – urgh. Still the corn is high, the courgettes are coming on and we have a bumper crop of garlic and red onoins to lift and dry this weekend – so it’s not all bad.

An update on the Lauren Nassef/Samantha Beeston issue – SB has stolen more than 32 drawings by Lauren – and a few others by other illustrators too. There are images of her website on Book-by-it’s-Cover and even her header was one of Lauren’s drawings. Incredible! What was this girl thinking?! I’m astounded.

I did these illustrations a while ago – they are for my local food coop – they are going to be screenprinted onto aprons, bags and tea-towels and I can’t wait to see them finished!

The Eternal Triangle

March 23, 2009 · 1 Comment

A very satisfying afternoon on Saturday. I woke up thinking about Jacques Tati and decided I wanted to draw a character kind of inspired by his appearance in Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot

Here’s a taster from my sketchbook:

Boy

He then introduced this girl:

Who was waiting for her date:

I’m going to refine these and they might form part of something bigger.

Wrestling

March 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I started work on a really nice commission today – for my local food co-op. Unfortunately it was impossible to draw at the co-op – too many people moving too much in too small a space – and too many friendly interested people who kept talking to me (and lots of temptation for me to talk to them), so I only did a few sketches. Most of it will be done in the peace of my studio from reference photos. Which I hate doing, but at least these are my own and I can make them BIG.

Here’s someone wrestling with a bag of dried mango. But you knew that, right?

Wet Bus RideWet Bus Ride

I drew the original drawing last summer, but I’ve been playing around with it, re-drawing in different media and adding colour. I quite like this version – though unfortunately the scanner hasn’t picked up all the variations in tone.

I apologise for the chaos on the Continuous Line Drawings page – I tried to sort it yesterday but failed – tomorrow, I’ll get it organised!

Unfortunately this is a little grey as it’s a photo, but you get the idea.
