What?
For one reason or another I’ve been neglecting this blog. In part it’s because I got in a rut. When I started it the idea was to push myself to experiment and explore – and I did begin doing this, then I started doing blind contour drawings which became direct response drawings and then I got stuck. I stopped pushing myself. Of course I’d found something I wanted to continue, yes, but I wasn’t trying to take it any further. So for a while I stopped – I returned to some fairly standard observational drawing and sketching. this is what I always do when I’m stuck – I go back to basics.
Whilst I was in Norwich last week (see sketch in the post below) I went to see an exhibition of early work by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson: some of my favourite artists. This was a real turning point – it wasn’t the work as such which gave me an insight so much as their attitude towards their work – I realised I’d been asking myself the wrong questions and that was my problem. So I thought it was about time I asked myself some new ones:

Why?
Unfortunately since then I’ve had the lurgy so I haven’t got as far as answers yet, but I do have a renewed sense of interest and excitement in drawing and this had been missing for a while.
