Late II and something completely different
October 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment
I made a final version of the rough I did for Illustration Friday yesterday. Unfortunately, as it’s A3 sixe, it’s too big for my scanner. It’s been ages since I worked larger than A4 (half this size – about 8.5 x 11.5 inches) and I really enjoyed it. The final drawing of Jack’s Cafe will be A3 size too. There’s something about drawing without looking at the paper that makes me want to work larger – maybe it’s the boldness that this type of drawing encourages. I don’t know, but after doing several stippled, finely wrought and VERY SMALL natural history illustrations, it’s certainly wonderful to start sweeping my arm around on some space!
I also made some crochet wristwarmers this week – nothing to do with drawing of course but I’m really pleased by how they turned out:
I’m thinking about whether to add a button fastening at the cuff – I have a pair of vintage buttons that match exactly.
It won’t be long before I need gloves though -it’s getting colder!

Jack’s Cafe
October 20, 2008 · 2 Comments
I’ve been doing so much faffing about today. I’ve got quite a lot done, but it’s all preparation for other things, so there’s little to show for it. Here’s a sketch of a work in progress though.
Direct response drawing.
I also realised I made a really stupid mistake with a listing on Ebay. What’s even worse is the item sold for a good price, but I’ve had to confess my error (of description) and I’m waiting to hear back from the successful bidder. If she still wants them that’ll be great, but honestly I could kick myself!

A rough based on this drawing. I’m going to do a larger, slightly more refined version of this at some point.
Hope you’ve all had a good weekend

Direct response drawing.
This is my partner. He doesn’t really have a cauliflower ear! If you can guess what he’s doing I’ll send you something – I imagine this will be quite difficult, so if no-one’s got it by next weekend, I’ll send something to the person with the nearest guess – so what do you have to lose?

Graphite and coloured pencil.
I’ve had this idea in mind since Friday but only just got round to doing it. This is a direct response drawing of a violinist – somewhat modified!. I did try a fully worked up version but came to the conclusion I preferred this one. It has more confidence and assurance than the other version.
I have several other drawings to upload – I hope to get round to this tomorrow. I was away from home for part of the weekend and it really makes a difference. so many emails and things to attend to.
Hope you all had good weekends.

My Vintage 1960s Cream Coat
October 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment
I wore this coat for two winters – it’s late 1960s/early1970s – very flattering and smart. I always felt cream was a really bad colour for a coat, but despite many wearings it has no stains or marks – maybe it’s mark proof! I hope somone else will love it like I did. It’s now on e-bay (I’m obsidian942 if you’re interested).
The scanner makes the brown paper look wrinkled – it isn’t, particularly.
And here’s the direct response drawing I did first:

CAT boots

These boots went up on Ebay too, today. I wore them a bit last year, but I’m really off them this year. Once I find shoes I like I hang on to them for years, but these just don’t work for me anymore.
And here’s another drawing of these and the cowboy boots from yesterday. Direct response drawing this time.

Everything I’m getting rid of

Graphite and coloured pencil on cartridge paper, 21×29.5 cm
Soon, soon, soon (at least I hope so) my partner and I will be re-locating. He is job hunting and has an interview tomorrow for the job he really wants, so I’m crossing all my fingers and toes he gets it. Even if he doesn’t get this one, there seem to be quite a lot of posts coming up in his field right now, so prospects look good.
Moving always seems a good time to me to clear out things I no longer want or use and this time I decided to draw everything I’m getting rid of. Although I say that now – I may not manage to draw everything, I’ll see how it goes. First up are my red cowboy boots. I’ve had these a good few years and worn them…twice. So they are going to e-bay to see if anyone else wants them as they are in excellent condition, and are a beautiful ruby red colour. If you happen to be interested they are a UK size 7 and European size 40. My name’s obsidian942 on E-bay.
